If open-circuit voltage is over the station’s maximum, the panel is not a deal. It is a paperweight that can take the charge controller with it.
This is the silo where people fry inputs or wonder why a “400 W” folio delivers 90 W. Buy in this order: station window, Voc, watts versus actual sun, packed weight, then theft and wiring.

A portable panel is an accessory to a station, not a miniature utility. If you do not yet own the battery, start at power station buying guide and come back. If you wanted rails on a roof, you are in the wrong silo — rooftop solar is out of scope on The Home Backup.
Read the station’s solar input window. Max watts, max Voc, sometimes max Isc. Write the numbers down. Cold sun raises Voc — leave margin.
Prefer the same-brand cable. SolarSaga into Jackery, SP200L into BLUETTI, PS400 into SOLIX.
Size watts to the job, using dull daily kilowatt-hour guesses, not nameplate times eight.
Count packed weight as a carry, not as a spec-sheet flex.
Plan theft, hail, and wind on the same page as connectors.
If you need more than one panel, decide series vs parallel before you buy Y-cables.
Voc versus the station window
Open-circuit voltage is the voltage the panel produces with no load, typically highest when the cells are cold and the sun is bright. Charge controllers list a maximum. Exceed it and you are in repair-or-replace territory. This is the spec we refuse to guess.
In our catalog as of August 26, 2026, the BLUETTI SP200L lists Voc of 24.6 V. The Jackery SolarSaga 200W and the Anker SOLIX PS400 have Voc left blank because manufacturer pages conflicted or were unclear. We did not pick a reseller’s number. We did not average two conflicting charts. You must read the live panel page and the live station page together on the day you buy. If you cannot find a Voc you trust, do not series-wire, and think hard before you buy.
Margin matters. A panel that “should be fine” at 25 °C may not be fine at 0 °C. Stations also list a watt ceiling. A 400 W nameplate into a 200 W input is not a bargain; the extra glass is ballast. Confirm both the volt window and the watt window.

Watts versus sun
Nameplate watts assume a defined irradiance (often 1,000 W/m²) and a cell temperature that your driveway will not hold. Expect well under nameplate in winter, haze, low sun angle, dirty glass, and anything that is not near perpendicular. A 200 W folder in decent sun might return on the order of 0.6–1.2 kWh in a day. That is a useful top-up for a ~2 kWh station. It is not a 200 × 8 = 1,600 Wh fantasy.
Overnight fridge backup is a battery problem. Multi-day grid-down is a panel-plus-battery problem. A four-hour evening outage does not justify a 35.3 lb folio. A three-day event with midday sun might. Clouds can cut yield roughly in half; they can also cut it worse. Partial shade on one cell can crater a whole string. Do not park a panel in the shadow of the house and blame the brand.
Window-through-glass charging is a demo. Laminated glass reflects and the angle is usually wrong. If the only sun you have is through a pane, you do not have a solar plan. You have a gadget photo.
Weight you will actually carry
Jackery lists the SolarSaga 200W at 14.33 lb. BLUETTI lists the SP200L at 17.15 lb. Anker lists the PS400 at 35.3 lb. Those numbers decide whether the kit leaves the garage. Two 200 W folders plus stands and cables is already a project. One PS400 is 35.3 lb in a single grab — emphasize that before you chase 400 W on paper.
Weight also interacts with kickstands. A heavier folio can be more stable until it is not, and then it is more of a problem when it flips. You still have to carry it over a wet driveway. If you will not, buy the lighter 200 W class or skip panels and buy watt-hours.
Theft and weather
Unfolded panels are visible, expensive, and awkward to lock. A street-facing lawn is a gift to a thief with a van. Bring them in when you leave. Bring them in before hail. IP68 on the SolarSaga and IP67 on the PS400 are water and dust ratings, not hail insurance and not a theft rating. IP on the SP200L is blank in our catalog because the manufacturer page was unclear — do not invent IP67 for it.
Wind is the other weather. Folding leaves are sails. Guy-line if you must, babysit if you can, fold if the gusts win. A wet autumn driveway with leaves (the mood photo on the hub) is realistic. So is giving up and running on battery until the front passes.
Do not leave four figures of glass unsupervised on a public-facing lot.
Do not treat an IP rating as a hail warranty.
Do not run cables as trip wires across a dark stoop without tape and a plan.
Do not aim at a puddle mirror and call it extra irradiance.
Series versus parallel
Series wiring stacks voltage. Voc of the string is roughly the sum of the Voc of each panel (plus cold-weather rise). That is how people over-volt a station that would have been happy with one panel. Parallel wiring keeps voltage in the neighborhood of a single panel and stacks current. Then the risk moves to connectors, wire gauge, and the station’s current limit.
If you cannot say which one you are doing, buy a single matched panel first. If you later add a second SolarSaga, SP200L, or PS400, read the station manual for the approved topology. Y-cables from a marketplace tab are not a design review. MC4 connectors are not a personality. They are a way to make a mistake that looks professional.
