A realistic all-in for a straightforward air-cooled automatic install is often $7,000–$15,000. That is the number to hold in your head. Complicated gas, a long trench, a service upgrade, or a liquid-cooled “run everything” job climbs from there — sometimes well past $20,000 when the house is large and the pipe is wrong. If $7k–$15k ends the conversation, you are not a standby customer yet. That is not a moral failure. It is a product fork.
Ownership is the line people forget. Weekly or monthly exercise burns a little fuel and a little neighbor patience. Oil and filters are cheap compared with a seized engine. A starting battery that dies in year four is a Saturday without backup. Dealer contracts in the $150–$400 band are how a lot of owners actually keep the plant alive. DIY is fine if you will do it. An unmaintained $10,000 install is not “paid off.” It is deferred failure.
The cost is for the house that has to behave like a house when the utility does not. It is not for the person who had one four-hour flicker and wants a status object in the side yard. Get the answers in writing. A low equipment number with a vague “install TBC” is how $4,000 becomes $14,000. Compare two bids on the same load list, not on whose brochure is glossier. Neither replaces a well-plus-heat-pump plant for a week of ice. Both beat a generator you cannot afford to install correctly.
