“Best whole house generator” lists that rank ten nearly identical 22 kW units are not useful on a new domain and they are not how electricians spec jobs. Spec the class first.
The Home Backup does not publish a trophy table of named standby SKUs with fake “check price” buttons. Jackery, BLUETTI, and Anker SOLIX do not make these engines. A dealer who lives in your gas-code world will still out-spec a national listicle. What a publisher can do — without inventing click IDs — is force the class decision: air-cooled automatic in the 9–12 kW band, liquid-cooled automatic at 20 kW and up, or a portable plus a legal inlet. Everything else is enclosure color and whose app pings your phone.
If you came here from a storm panic tab, slow down. A class mistake costs thousands in the wrong direction: either you buy a 10 kW plant that will never start the heat pump, or you pour a liquid-cooled pad for a house that only needed a fridge and a well on lockouts. Read the table, then the caveats. Altitude, locked-rotor amps, monthly exercise, and oil are not fine print. They are why “best” is a job title, not a medal. Air-cooled standby, roughly 9–12 kW, propane or natural gas, automatic transfer switch. Covers lights, refrigeration, well (if 240 V is in the load calc), and an air handler — not necessarily two outdoor condensers at once. This is the default US suburban plant.
Liquid-cooled, often 20–24 kW and up, sometimes much larger. Quieter at the pad, longer expected duty, much higher install. This is the class people mean when they say they do not want to manage circuits during an ice storm.

Air-cooled means the engine dumps heat with fins and a fan, like a lawn-equipment cousin that grew up and got an enclosure. That is why the 9–12 kW class is cheaper, lighter on the pad, and less happy as a week-long full-load machine in August. Liquid-cooled means a radiator loop, the same idea as a car. That class is built for longer duty, lower neighbor drama at the property line, and the kW numbers people quote when they want two condensers and a well without thinking. You pay for that in concrete, gas pipe, and a truck that needs a path.
Do not treat square footage as a kilowatt formula. A tight 1,800 sq ft heat-pump house can need the liquid-cooled class. A leaky 3,000 sq ft gas-furnace house that will lock out the air conditioner can live on air-cooled. The load list in the buying guide is the ranking, not the listing photos. Nameplate kW assumes a defined power factor, temperature, and often sea-level air. Climb a few thousand feet and the same air-cooled unit is a smaller machine. Ask the dealer for the altitude derate before you fall in love with a brochure kilowatt. A 4-ton heat pump’s locked-rotor amps can still brown out a generator that “looks big enough” on running watts. Starting current is a spike, not an average. If the installer cannot talk LRA, soft-start, or load-shed without waving the brochure, get another quote.
Whole-house does not mean unlimited. A managed panel that sheds the range and both condensers is a valid, cheaper design. A plant that claims to run everything and then trips on the well plus the heat pump is a failed spec, not a failed brand. Exercise the unit on the schedule in the manual — typically weekly, under some load — so the engine sees oil pressure and the transfer switch actually transfers. Budget oil, filters, a battery, and a service contract. An engine that sits eleven months is a project, not insurance.
Placement still belongs in “best.” An otherwise correct 12 kW class in a side yard that violates window clearances or a noise ordinance is not the best unit. It is a failed permit. The Home Backup is not your AHJ, gas fitter, or HOA board. Local rules win. If two quotes disagree on class, the useful fight is the load calc and the gas pipe, not whose badge is on the enclosure.
If the honest job is a refrigerator, network, lights, and a medical device, you do not have a standby problem. You have a watt-hour problem.
