Can a solar generator run a sump pump

The search shows up when the basement is wet and the grid is dark. The honest answer is starting watts first, then hours. A 120-volt portable station can run many pedestal pumps. It is not a promise for every horsepower plate, and it is not a week of rain without a bigger tank.

The answer in the first hundred words

Yes for many 120-volt pedestal pumps, if the nameplate starting watts fit under the station’s continuous rating and you accept hours, not days. No for a 240-volt pump, and no if the plate prints a start spike the inverter cannot take. Starting watts before hours

A sump motor wakes with a short spike, then settles much lower while it runs. Write the nameplate down. If the start number is blank, treat the station’s continuous rating as the ceiling and test once in daylight with a bucket of water in the pit and a working outlet, not during a flood.

How long a 2 kWh tank lasts

While the pump is spinning, draw is often a few hundred watts. It does not spin all hour. A light rain with a short cycle can leave most of the tank for later. A stuck float or a long storm that keeps water coming turns the tank into an evening. Put a 400-watt run against a 2,048 Wh tank and you get about five hours of continuous pumping before inverter overhead and the margin you should leave on LiFePO4. • A short cycle. The float rises, the pump clears the pit, then rests. Hours stretch.
• A long storm. The pit never empties. Hours shrink.
• A second load on the same cord. Fridge, internet, or a heater steal from the sump.
• A half-empty tank. Do not plan on 100 percent of nameplate.

When this is the wrong tool

• The pump is 240 volts. A 120-volt portable station is the wrong shape. That fork is the F3800 or a standby generator.
• The nameplate start is above what the inverter will take. Do not buy on hope.
• The basement floods for days. One 2 kWh tank is a bridge, not a generator on a pad.
